The young Finnish baritone Joonas Asikainen graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 2016. He has studied under such teachers as Irja Auroora, Erkki Rajamäki and Sirkka Parviainen.
Asikainen won the first prize in the Kangasniemi singing competition in the summer 2015. In the same year he also won the third prize in the Merikanto singing competition and in January 2016 he was awarded with the third prize in the Lappeenranta singing competition. The same year he was the recipient of the Martti Talvela Award. This award, in memory of the phenomenal Finnish opera singer Martti Talvela, is one of Finland’s most prestigious prizes.
In the summer 2016 Asikainen made his debut as a Young prisoner at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Janáček´s opera ”The House of the dead”. He will also sing the role of Kaiser Overall in Saaristo Opera´s production of Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Ullmann in Turku.
Asikainen has performed the following roles on stage in Finland: Belcore in L´elisir d´amor, Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Gabriel von Eisenstein in Die Fledermause, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and Hietanen in Tuntematon sotilas by Pylkkänen.
Asikainen has also performed abroad as a concert soloist in countries like Estonia, Italia, Wales, Sweden and Latvia with repertoire as the baritone-solo in Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms, Requiem by Fauré and the bass-solo in St John’s Passion by J.S. Bach and Symphony nr 9 by Beethoven.
He has received support by the Finnish cultural foundation and the Selim Eskelin foundation.
