William Wallace, winner of the 2016 London Handel Singing Competition, graduated from the National Opera Studio and the Royal College of Music. William has worked with eminent conductors including Laurence Cummings, William Christie, Jorg Straube, Anthony Negus, Brian Kay and Julian Perkins.
William made his acclaimed debut at Longborough Festival Opera in June 2018 as the Steuermann in Der fliegende Holländer and performed the role of Grimoaldo in Handel’s Rodelinda with the Cambridge Handel Opera Company. He made his debut at the Wigmore Hall performing Ahasuerus in Handel’s oratorio, Esther, for the London Handel Festival and as Jonathan in Alexander Balus for the Internationale Händel-Festspiele Göttingen in May 2018.
During 2019 William performed Belfiore in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera with Israeli Opera and will return in 2022 to perform the role of Beppe in Pagliacci and Alessandro in Mozart’s Il Re Pastore. He performed Haydn’s Creation in Athens with Brian Kay, and the evangelist and tenor soloist in St. Matthew Passion in Hannover Marktkirche with Jorg Straube, Easter 2019. William recorded a concert performance of Margaret Catchpole: Two Worlds Apart, at Snape Maltings, and created the role of Claudius, in a new contemporary opera, I Claudius, touring Spain. William sang Tamino in Die Zauberflote for Opera de Baugé, and will be returning in 2022 to sing Alfredo in La Traviata. In the Autumn of 2020 he sang the role of Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di siviglia for Opera Project in Bristol.
William covered Arbante for Glyndebourne Festival’s production of Hipermestra, and Ferrando for Gyndebourne’s 2017 Tour of Così fan Tutte. He also performed Tamino in the Magic Flute with Mid Wales Opera, The Sailor and The Spirit in Les Arts Florissants’ production of Dido and Aeneas, and the title role in Thomas Arne’s Alfred for The Northern Opera Group.
William’s extensive oratorio and concert repertory includes Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Handel’s Messiah, Joseph and His Brethren, Esther, Theodora, Judas Maccabeus, Acis and Galatea, Haydn’s Creation, Nelson Mass and Harmoniemesse, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noel and Bach’s Cantatas, Magnificat and Passions (as Evangelist and tenor soloist). He has made two appearances on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune singing Handel and Britten, and also as soloist in Messiah in the Albert Hall and at St George’s Hanover Square for the London Handel Society.
William lives in Oslo, Norway and has already established cooperations with several Norwegian orchestras and institutions. In 2022 he sang Evangelist in St John’s Passion with Oslo Domkor.
