Big news from the Norwegian classical music scene: The talented conductor Gunvald Ottesen is joining Den Norske Opera & Ballett for an exciting new residency as Assisting Conductor for the upcoming 2026/2027 season.
Known for his incredible energy and love for musical drama, Gunvald is ready to bring his passion to one of the most prestigious stages in the country. For a freelancer, landing a gig like this is a massive milestone—and he couldn’t be more thrilled about the journey ahead.
Stepping out of his comfort zone
Gunvald has spent years mastering opera and musical theatre, but this new role will also push him into unfamiliar territory: The world of dance.
“I applied for this position because I grew up with music theatre and stage drama, having previously worked extensively with both opera and musicals,” Gunvald says. “While ballet is entirely new territory for me, it is a facet of stage art I am eager to explore.”
He adds, “As a freelancer, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have a stable residency, especially with such a phenomenal orchestra and ensemble.”
Teaming up with an idol
The absolute highlight of the job? Getting to work directly with the house’s world-class talents and top artistic leadership.
“I look forward to collaborating with the house’s talented artists,” Gunvald shares, “and it is a particular honor to work alongside Music Director Edward Gardner, who has been a major inspiration of mine for years.”
Huge congratulations to Gunvald! We can’t wait to follow his journey into the world of ballet. Make sure to catch him at Operaen soon!
